2015 RUSSIAN RIVER MERLOT ♦ 91 Pts & GOLDS ♦
92% Merlot comes from the ‘Dunn Vineyard’ which sits in the low lying eastern foothills in a slightly warmer region of the Russian River Valley. The vines grow in well drained gravely soils on a westerly facing slope which allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and capture the last bit of the sun’s afternoon warmth, an essential factor in this much cooler vintage.
8% Cabernet Sauvignon came from a high elevation vineyard in the western hills in the Russian River Valley, where the vines sit above the fog in glorious morning sunshine. This fruit was harvested 4 days later than the Merlot.
14 months of barrel aging in 100% French Oak, of which about 20% new, has created additional textures and dimensions, and has created a distinctive and classic Merlot more reminiscent of Europe than California.
This wine style shows off more of this varietals red fruit characters, and perhaps some whiffs of dried herbs and a touch of tobacco.
