Description

Egg tempera, gold leaf, carved wood

6" x 4" x 1"

This diptych is from a series of icon-like portraits. The artist pulled from her love of Byzantine iconography and woodcarving. She put love and care into each step of the process and made them as personalized and intimate as possible. The artist designed, carved, sanded and stained the wooden frames, mixed traditional rabbit skin glue gesso, applied gold leaf, and mixed and layered the egg tempera pigments.

Elizabeth Menges is an artist and high school art teacher with an MFA in Painting from Boston University. Elizabeth's work uses portraiture to explore her role as a female in society and her blend of traditional (Greek and Cypriot) and contemporary (feminist and American) roots.
