Squire Boone, younger brother of Daniel Boone, was a prominent explorer and frontiersman instrumental in the development of the Wilderness Road.

Squire and his brother Daniel discovered these caverns in 1790.  Years later Squire escaped into the caverns while being pursued by Indians.  Considering the land to be Holy Ground, he settled here with his wife, four sons and their families.  Upon his death in 1815, Squire was laid to rest within the cavern as he had requested.
