Elegant sushi preparations have made a comeback in Novato when world-renowned chef Takatoshi Toshi opened Masa’s Sushi and Appetizer in December. 

Chef Toshi comes full circle after working under Okugawa at Masa’s Sushi until 2008. During his seven years there, he was able to refine his technique before moving on to Sushi Ran in Sausalito for 10 years, where he became head chef and earned a Michelin star in addition to first place in the 2014 World Sushi Cup and third place at the 2015 Global Sushi Challenge.

A partnership at Kinjo, an omakase restaurant on Russian Hill in San Francisco, and another Michelin star followed. Water damage caused the temporary closure of Kinjo in September; it will reopen in March. Late last year, when Toshi’s former mentor, Okugawa, retired Masa’s, Toshi took the opportunity to shift gears and return to his Marin restaurant roots.
