Duration: 3 hours

Students: Max 5, above 16 years old (the age restriction is for safety reasons since the workshop involves participants handling highly corrosive chemical)

Venue: Bridges’s mom’s home in Sherman Oaks

Pre-class preparation:
You must wear closed-toe shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants to this class.
Please bring a phone with a calculator app.
Please bring a mini-weighing machine for up to a 1 or 2 pound, if you happen to have one.

Brief description:
This hands-on class is for beginners who want to learn how to make soap using the cold-process method (bar soap) from start to finish. The participants get to bring home a set of notes each and a total of 5 pound of soap, about 30 bars of soap worth around $180.

We'll cover the following:
A brief history of soap making & what makes cold process different from modern-day, store-bought soap bars

The chemistry behind soap making, soaping triangle, saponification process, and other important soap terms like super-fat, trace and curing

Lye information & safety ("Safety First!")

The materials and ingredients needed

How to formulate a soap balanced recipe based on your needs (e.g. dry skin, sensitive skin), using a soap calculator

Making your soap

How to test the pH of your soap to make sure it is safe to use

Soap cutting (3-5 days later or the instructor can cut for you)

In class, you will:
Choose a recipe that is best for your skin type (e.g. more conditioning or bubbly)

Make 1 lb of soap in the silicone mold (2-3 bars, depending on the mold)

Add other additives to your soap, if desired

It takes at least 4-6 weeks for the soap to cure and be ready for use.  It will be hard to wait, but well worth it! Then, you'll be ready to make your next batch of soap - it's addictive!
