The history of Sam’s Grill dates back to 1867, when an Irishman, Michael Bolan Moraghan, began selling fresh oysters at a stall in the open-air market at the base of California Street. By the 1890’s Moraghan’s company had developed into the City’s leading seafood establishment, with his specialty focused on local oysters, he became known as “The Oyster King.” The business continued to thrive as the Burlingame Oyster Co. and in 1922, Samuel Zenovich acquired the oyster company that became known as “Sam’s.” In 1936, the restaurant was purchased by Frank Seput, who formalized the establishment’s current name, “Sam’s Grill & Seafood Restaurant.” The Seput family owned and operated Sam’s from 1932 to 2005. Frank Sr., Frank Jr., Walter and Walter’s son Gary oversaw more than 70 very productive and formative years that helped establish what Sam’s Grill is remembered for today. Phil Lyons bought the restaurant in 2005 and retired in 2014, staying true to Sam’s colorful history. After many years as part of the Sam’s family, Peter Quartaroli became managing partner with the support of a group of loyal customers and investors.
