Description

Receive an 11"x11"x1" Modern Interpretation on Acrylic-on-Wood of Dick Martin’s ‘Headless Horseman’ 60’s Painting from Martin Munroe, 2018.

Dick Martin, an artist and a former resident of Tarrytown, designed this Headless Horseman image back in the 1960’s to honor the town’s centennial. From trivets to flags to the cover of the Sleepy High School yearbook (late 60’s/early 70’s), Martin’s design has enjoyed adoration and hometown fame through the years.

Drawing inspiration from this mid-century image, Martin Munroe, an artist who currently resides in Brooklyn, but was raised in Tarrytown and attended the Tarryown's Public Schools as well, decided to create two pieces of art to honor Dick Martin’s work, as well as this great part of local history. The first is a public chalk mural under the stone bridge near the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in the Rockefeller Preserve, for all to enjoy.  And this painting, a personal work of acrylic-on-wood which is being auctioned off.

Both Munroe’s chalk and acrylic-on-wood renderings of Dick Martin’s Headless Horseman are steeped in village history going back more than half a century, and are a wonderful way of keeping his interpretation of Brom Bones & Gunpowder in the public eye for another generation to enjoy. And if you happen to be out for a walk, check out Martin Munroe’s chalk mural in the woods while it lasts (nature tends to slowly erase chalk over time).
