Description
Collectible Surgi Doll by artist Catherine Heard: Reclaimed Depression-era quilt fabrics, glass eyes.
Quilts are intimate items, often made by family from discarded clothing. The Depression-era fabric in this doll comes from a quilt that was made by my grandmother, Alma Janke (née Lantz), who was born in 1921. Many of the fabrics come from flour or sugar sacks, which were colourfully printed to appeal to thrifty homemakers who used them to make clothing, and then recycled their scraps into quilts.

Catherine Heard’s work interrogates the histories of science, medicine and the body. Simultaneously attractive and repulsive, her works delve into primal anxieties about the body. She uses traditional craft and historical techniques as foils for abject subject matter. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
