Description

The children went on a walk to check out the many mosaics we have around the school. Inspired by this, the children were invited to create a mosaic on the canvas. They painted paper and textures in various colors and shades and then free-cut and tore the pieces. These were used as the base for their creation. The children then decided how they were going to arrange the various colors and shades they had been working on by drawing visual borders of where each colored section would go. The children were encouraged to make deliberate decisions as to which pieces should go next to another, within the border for that color. The process of cutting and gluing one piece at a time also helped them to consider what new shape would complement the existing shapes. Some students wanted to add additional materials onto those areas covered with paper. By adding layers of different materials, our mosaic turned into a beautiful mixed media collage. Materials used included tempura paint, watercolors, pastels, markers, buttons, and various loose parts.  This was not an easy task as some materials were extremely small and gluing become a tedious job. Nonetheless, the children worked really hard to create this masterpiece.
