This is an exclusive afternoon charter on the Beach Hopper II and guided tour of the Reef Check Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project (G2KR) in Pacific Grove, CA. This important study is poised to determine the threshold density of urchin barrens where kelp forests will reestablish. This specially designed tour for 4 scuba divers will feature a pre-dive briefing by the lead diver, Keith Rootsaert, on the current status of the urchin experiment followed by a short boat ride to the survey area, where there will be a guided tour of the experimental plots and demonstration of Reef Check protocols provided by two Reef Check volunteer professional divers. This is a great opportunity for scientists and non-scientists alike to learn firsthand about the urchin barren state of the Central California kelp forests and Reef Check conservation efforts.
The Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project is a Reef Check urchin experiment in Pacific Grove, CA. The scientific project involves culling urchins on 20 reefs surrounded by sand to determine the threshold density of purple urchins where kelp will reestablish in an urchin barren. The project initiated in June 2019 and we are already seeing kelp return!
