mary jane dodd: "morning mantra" Copper Wall Hanging
Item Number: 359
Time Left: CLOSED
Description
Asked to incorporate her writing into her metalwork, mary jane dodd first created offering bowls. Lion's Roar was fortunate enough to have one of the bowls in its 2015 auction. In 2016 mary jane has been incorporating her writing into copper hangings. The successful bidder for this item will receive the following hanging with mantra stamped in copper:
as the moon sets
and the sun rises
may i begin my day
awake.
may i move through
each moment
mindfully
lightly
and with clarity.
a heart
bursting with love,
a mind
propped open,
may i shine
to lessen
the darkness
of
another being's
suffering.
The hanging is 15" high with a 7" wide wooden mount, 6" wide copper sheet. The letters are each 5/16 inch or 8mm tall. The metal is a heavy 20 gauge weight.
This being a mantra that could have been recited in any time, in any place, across the globe and through millennia - mary jane has given it an antique finish. The process involves cutting and texturing the copper sheet. The process of stamping the letters involves patience and weight: two hours and an anvil. A patina is then created, one to darken and three to add color and depth. (The final photo shows the metal prior to treating.)
mary jane describes herself as 'a maker of protective, connective, meaning-filled adornment and small metal objects... observer of humanity and the natural world... lover of fire, metal, hammers, anvils & patina... but also soft fibers, deliberate stitches, glowing gemstones & words... seeker of peace..."
