Description
While I had an interest in landscape photography before digital technology changed how nearly everyone approached this medium (See the Adirondack gallery.), I developed a wider interest when I moved from film to pixels using a compact digital camera with a spotting scope as a long lens, digiscoping birds with some birding friends. Eventually most of us graduated to DSLR cameras. I had been birding for 35 years and that pastime segued easily to digital nature photography; I could enjoy them simultaneously! Photography workshops, in turn, encouraged me to take this to another level by applying my lifelong interest in art to my images.
While my photos document the natural world, I approach photography as art. I manipulate photos in post processing to achieve my artistic goals: what remains in the shot and what is eliminated; what is extraneous or distracting; how do I position my subject; how do I add emphasis to the subject? Artists in at least two disciplines influence my decisions.
