Description
COMPOTE CENTERPIECE, H 5 ½ “ W 8”
This is high quality, beautifully classic Wedgwood in black Queensware known as Ravenstone. Ravenstone a matt or eggshell durable black glaze developed by Norman Wilson in the 1930's when he also developed the white Moonstone glaze. It is more like satin or eggshell rather than matte. Items were made in this design in the 1950s and 1960s. The handles on the larger vases are made in delicate but solidly attached shell shapes. They all have the standard Wedgwood backstamp for this kind of ware, featuring a circle indicating "Wedgwood of Etruria and Barlaston". Since the backstamp is black, it is visible only when you have an angle that allows differences in smoothness to be observed. The base of each piece is also incised with "Wedgwood". *It is the donor’s responsibility to establish the value of in-kind gifts for tax-deductibility
