Rachel Leaney is a Boston-area artist whose painterly monotypes on paper and plaster have appeared in regional and national juried exhibitions and arts collaborations. An active member of the printmaking community, she works out of her Waltham studio, at group cooperatives, and whenever possible, in nature.
Jardiniere #1 is the first in a series of three separate monotypes which consider the curves and movement of an arrangement of hyacinth bulbs. Translucent glazes are layered, by several passes through the press, in an attempt to capture both the daylight as it filters through and around the stems, and the gloss and richness of color in the antique majolica jardiniere. It is never the artist's goal to create an exact likeness, but rather to capture a moment in time, however ephemeral.
