In 1939, Harry and Johanna Benken and their six children, moved from the west side of town to the sleepy community of Silverton. Originally dairy farmers, the property they had just purchased had a small floral shop and greenhouse on it, and with that they traded in their farm tools for those of the florist trade, and became known as H.J. Benken Florist.

In 1997, Michael Benken and his wife, Kathleen, became the third generation to own and operate H.J. Benken Florist & Greenhouses as a retail Garden Center, Floral and Greenhouse destination. They take pride in the fact that they have been given the opportunity to continue the dream of Harry and Johanna Benken. For close to seventy years, H.J. Benken has prided itself on quality and service, combined with innovative ideas and a friendly and knowledgable staff.
