Description

Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. is a current civil rights activist and Baptist minister who was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. As one of the most influential African Americans of the late 20th century, he rose to prominence working within Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was at the Memphis hotel with King when he was assassinated. His activism included work with Operation Breadbasket, the founding of People United to Save Humanity (PUSH), the Rainbow Coalition and as international negotiator to free  political prisoners and hostages in Syria, Iraq, Kuwait and Cuba.

Jackson won 16 state contests and millions of votes in his 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns, making him the first viable African-American candidate for President.
