Description

Introduction to Trop/Chant

The chant that Jews employ when reading sacred texts in services, called trop, is an amazing system. The melodies evoke personal, spiritual, and communal memories. The symbols form a method of musical notation, analogous to the staff in sheet music. The sequence of melody serves as punctuation to clarify the meaning of the words.

This hour introduction will begin wherever the student is. You don't need to read music, or even Hebrew, to enjoy learning about trop. If you do have either of those skills, we'll use them in the lesson. Our goal will be to chant the first two verses (sentences) of the Torah.
