About Gajraj: Gajraj was rescued by Wildlife SOS at 70 years old in 2017. Before his rescue, Gajraj was presented to a queen in India as a wedding gift. He spent his entire life as a temple elephant, and a tourist attraction in Maharashtra. He had increasing health issues – severe toenail and hip abscesses, degeneration of his hind limbs, and foot pads so damaged he was moving toward lameness. He now has lifetime geriatric care at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre.
Gajraj is easy to recognize because of his half-length tusks. He loves soft grass, ripened fruits, and mangoes. He also enjoys playing with his tire enrichment and getting warm oil massages by his care giver.
About the Artist: Emma Bowring was awarded artist of the month by Artist’s for Conservation. From the Artist: "The natural world is an amazing thing. From the humble bee and its role in pollination, to the fact that every time an African elephant takes a step, it creates a home for other animals; as its footprint fills with water. Every living thing has a purpose, it exists for a reason, has a role to play and contributes in some way to making the world a beautiful place ... unfortunately with one exception – modern man. By painting wildlife and nature, it's as if I become a part of that beautiful world, and by contributing funds from each of my paintings to animal welfare and conservation charities; I hope to undo a little of the damage done by humanity."
