Description
Gajraj was rescued in June 2017, when he had already lived 70 years being paraded around a temple in Maharashtra. He was a gift to a queen in Maharashtra on the occasion of her wedding, but walking around unnatural surfaces did not go well to Gajraj's feet and he developed severe osteoarthritis and suffered degradation of his foot pads and his toenails were covered with abscesses. When Wildlife SOS informed the queen of Gajraj's condition, she kindly consented to Gajraj's lifetime care and treatment at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre. An extremely patient and calm elephant, Gajraj is the oldest tusker under our care and is 73 years of age, currently, undergoing dedicated treatment for his toenail abscess, his chronic hip abscess and his arthritic limbs.
