About the artist:
Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849 - 1918)
Auguste Louis Lepère was a well-recognized Parisian painter and etcher. He is considered the leader of the creative revival of European wood engraving. Lepère focused mostly on daily life in both his etchings and wood engravings. He is now renowned for his innovations, such as the use of colored paper, or the combining of etching and wood engraving on the same print. He was an influence on Hawai’i etcher Huc-Mazelot Luquiens.
About Provins:
Provins is a town in north-central France near Paris. Its medieval architecture includes high ramparts with fortified gates, and the stone Tithe Barn. The barn was used as a market when Provins was a medieval trading hub and host of a major annual trade fair. With views over Provins, the hilltop César tower dates from the 12th century. The town's underground tunnels feature centuries-old wall inscriptions.
