About the print:
This print was made to mark the raising of a new pole at Camp Nor'wester on Johns Island in August 2018. The pole is a gift from Calvin Hunt and his family to celebrate the long friendship of the Holm and Hunt families. This relationship was reaffirmed in 2001 when Calvin Hunt carved an Eagle (Kwikw) and Raven (Gwawina) pole for the new Camp location on Johns Island. This friendship dates to the 1950s when Mungo and Abaya Martin were invited by Bill and Marty Holm to come to Camp Nor'wester with many of their Kwakwaka'wakw relatives to share their culture, songs, and dances with the Holm family and the Nor'wester community. From Mungo and Abaya's first visit in 1956 until now, Kwakwaka'wakw friends of the Holm family have been a part of the camp community as campers, staff, volunteers, and guests. 2018 is also the 50th anniversary of Calvin Hunt's first year as a Nor'wester camper.
This new pole, carved by Calvin Hunt along with John Livingston, Mervyn Child, and Kevin Cranmer, is based on the 45' pole carved by Bill Holm that stood outside the Bighouse on Sperry Peninsula. The imagery on the pole reflects the images that adorned that first house. These include a Sisiutl at the base holding a Copper in its mouth, a Huxwhukw, a Killer Whale, and a Thunderbird at the top.
