Artist’s Statement Ebru Scarves

These scarves are produced by the ancient Turkish process of painting on water called Ebru printing. In this work, Carol paints with acrylic on the surface of water that has been treated with methylcellulose. The composition is directed by the relative density of the pigments, their spreading coefficient, the sequence of adding paint, water temperature and of course gesture. The composition is then lifted and printed onto silk which in turn is cured with heat. Each one-of-a-kind scarves is made by hand one at a time.
