About the Artist

Doris Gingingara (1946 - 1999) was a prominent artist from Maningrida, an Aboriginal community on the north coast of Australia at the mouth of the Liverpool River. Her art conveys the intricate detail of the world seen from an Aboriginal women's perspective. Her work records her childhood experiences, events from everyday life, the things she saw around the bush, Dreaming totems, sacred places and the ceremonial traditions of her people.
