Artist Statement:

BIODYNAMIC POSTER PROJECT
ELOISE AVERY
My name is Eloise Avery and I am a graduate of Green Meadow Waldorf
School and currently a freshman at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts.
For my GMWS high school senior project I explored biodynamic farming by
attending the yearlong course at the Pfeiffer Center.

Biodynamics is one of many practices or methods such as Waldorf
education, Eurythmy, and Anthroposophic medicine, to name a few, that
were inspired by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. Biodynamics is based on
the indications given by Steiner when asked specifically about agriculture in
1924.

The term ‘biodynamics’ is not very well known outside of organic farming
or the anthroposophic community. Those of us who live in the Threefold
community, with the Pfeiffer Center and Duryea Farm at the Fellowship
Community next door, have come in contact with biodynamics at some
point or other, in gardening class maybe or stuffing cow horns with manure
at Michaelmas. However most of the world has no idea what the word even
means.

The dictionary and even people versed in biodynamics have many different
definitions. My own definition that I've come to during my study is as
follows; Biodynamics is a form of agriculture in which all aspects of the earth
and cosmos are used to further vitalize the food to nourish the body and the
spirit. The preparations are the core of biodynamics and as homeopathic
remedies are taken to heal and strengthen the body, the preparations are used to
heal and strengthen the earth.

When I asked myself, how can I possibly bring biodynamics to people in a
simple way? I decided to focus on the preparations, the core of biodynamics.
Inspired by a family friend who made artistic posters of various herbs and
recipes, I decided to make a series of posters based on the 9 biodynamic
preparations. Biodynamics, is in anthroposophical terms, homeopathic remedies for the earth, the preps are like the remedies; healing the earth and revitalizing it to create super nutritious and spiritually strengthening food.

By illustrating and explaining the preps, I hope more people will be drawn
to biodynamic agriculture and enjoy my posters which are both beautiful as
well as useful. I wanted something that people could hang on their walls,
but also use as an inspiration to learn more about Biodynamics.
