Description

THE CHUI MAMAS

Chui in Kiswahili means Panther or Leopard.  The Chui Mamas Circle chose this name to honor the recent rediscovery of the rare Black Panther in their region.  Like the Panther, these women are strong and fiercely committed to their tribe and to each other as tribal women in a modern world.

Each day they gather at Lewaso Lodge in the Laikipia region of Kenya to bead and bond.  The time together talking and sharing is as important as the pieces of jewelry and bowls that they create together.

A percentage of the proceeds from their sale is divided evenly between all of the women, providing them with a small income and a large dose of independence. The rest is put into an emergency fund used to repair roofs or purchase medicine for a sick child.

The patterns and colors represented in their work are grounded in the traditions of the Maasai Tribe and their celebration of dance, song, and community.

Together we are better.
