Description
Egypt: Three Essays on History, Religion and Art of Ancient Egypt.By Martin Brimmer. Decorated by Sarah Wyman Whitman.1892. 86pp on rag paper. Very Good with rubbing to leather covers. Extremely scarce. A collection of three essays written by Brimmer and his niece, Minna Chapman, during a trip to Egypt. Whitman's binding design in black on olive ooze leather of three stylized papyrus (Cyperus papyrus hadidii) stalks superimposed on the title (in Mrs. Whitman's inscriptional lettering) with the stems of the stalks forming the upright of the letter "Y", with a border of dash motifs. Includes a title page in red and black, color map of Egypt and the Nile delta, foliated initial caps and tailpieces all by Mrs. Whitman, as wells as 32 illustrations after photographs by the authors; maroon endpages. Considered to be Mrs. Whitman's great masterpiece is an allusion to both upper and lower Egypt and is also a skeuomorph of an ancient Coptic binding. A highly sought after and exceptionally scarce Whitman design.
