150th Anniversary of the Women's Rights Movement Celebration at Seneca Falls Newspapers


In 1998, the nation celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Women's Rights Movement.  The first women's rights conference was held in Seneca Falls in 1848 and the major 150th Anniversary Celebration was held in Seneca Falls in 1998.


This collection of eight newspapers that have been kept in plastic sleeves represents the vast numbers of newspapers that were distributed each day.  Each edition was published to recognize the wide range of activities as well as the ongoing array of celebrities and politicians who arrived on special days.


First Lady Hillary Clinton who had been so supportive of celebrating the anniversary delivered a major speech in the 100-degree heat to a rousing crowd on the anniversary date of July 19th in Seneca Falls in 1998.


Each day included a special array of speakers including former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver who were inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.


The late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and the former Women's Rights National Historical Park superintendent Josie Fernandez welcomed the DC Congressional Delegation  The newly written and ratified 1998 Declaration of Sentiments was sign by the late feminist Betty Friedan who was accompanied by Donna Shalalaof former Secretary Health and Human Services. 


There were musical performances including a headlining event by Judy Collins.  Important historical reenactments were conducted by a variety of casts and characters.  The week-long event includes thousands of participants from throughout the country.
