“I love watching the weather and whatever the time of year Cape May has always delighted in meteorological spectacles. Here is a sharp example of a shelf cloud over the harbor by the Coast Guard Base.

Cape May witnesses a lot of shelf clouds as weather coming from the west meets the Delaware Bay’s shallow and sediment laden waters which absorb the sun’s rays and create warmer temperatures. These warm waters can create an updraft and when that meets the downdraft of a cumulonimbus storm system it can produce a shelf cloud ahead of it on the outflow boundary as the air rises and condenses. These clouds can extend several miles. Sometimes the ‘Cape May bubble’ rears its mythological head and blows the storms to the north and so, as ominous as these clouds look, there may never be a drop of rain.”
