Description

Bates "Loomed to be Heirloomed," new in box, double beadspread in George Washington's Choice style. Off-white, hobnailed chenille and finished with a knotted string fringe on three sides, round corners at the foot and a 21 inch drop.

The Bates Manufacturing Company was started in Lewiston, Maine in 1850 by Benjamin Bates. The first Bates Bedspread was not actually woven until 8 years later in 1858. It wouldn’t be until 1940 that the famous textile company would introduce its most renowned style: George Washington’s Choice (a distinct candlewick bedspread that is now called the “Martha Washington's Choice.”

Though the original weave was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled hand weavers, the talented team at Bates Manufacturing was able to resurrect this beautiful pattern in 1940.
