Description

Tidal Flats, Before the Storm, is a plein air painting done in oil, on site at Wolf's Neck in Main, during a week-long intensive painting retreat. Created by Diana Ozolins, member of State of the Art Gallery. Camping in solitude, next to the tidal flats, Ozolins was able to roll out of sleeping bag to paint, uninterrupted, early morning and late afternoon. This gestural painting was done as the tide was out and a storm was coming in. It was a dramatic race to capture the mood of the sky as it changed from pleasant to menacing, and then pack up quickly and race for cover as lightning came closer. Diana Ozolins is an Ithaca-based landscape painter working in oils. Color and design are foremost in her painting. Her palette knife technique results in a highly-textured surface, where random shapes coalesce into realism at a distance. She does plein air paintaing as well as studio works from oil sketches and photos.
