Description

Henry David Thoreau Birthplace #1 is an original white-line woodcut print by
Keith Bergman.  Image 6.5 by 8.

The white-line woodcut or Provincetown print is a single block printing method developed in Provincetown in 1915. The image is carved in wood and then the color is applied to the wood block. The white line gives a skeleton or outline to the print.

Bergman was taught the single block printing method by Kathryn Smith, who was taught by her grandmother, Ferrol Sibley Warthen, a student of Blanche Lazzell. Lazell was one of the founding members of the Provincetown Printers.
