Description

St. Amelia - patron saint of farmers and fishermen.  This metal sculpture is created from an old farm shovel. A little over 10"tall x 4" wide.

Created by metalsmith Lowell Tasset, this sculpture depicts St. Amalburga (Amelia). Married to Count Witger, she was the mother of three children (also saints, St. Gudula, St. Emebert, and St. Reineldis). She taught all her children herself, including religion. After her kids were grown she and her husband retired to the Benedictine monasteries  where she embraced a life of asceticism and prayer, eventually receiving the veil from Saint Willibrord. She was once known to have crossed a lake on a giant sturgeon, which led to her frequently being depicted with a fish. She is also frequently represented with a palm branch and open book.

Lowell Tasset has always had a deep appreciation of the patterns, textures, and geometric forms found in world around us. Growing up on a farm gave him appreciation of farm machinery and now he uses it as his raw material. He prefers to use hand tools, as his primary interest is in direct metal sculpting, making all of Lowell's creative sculpture hand forged and one of a kind.
