Description
The Odyssey is Homer's epic of Odysseus' 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. While Odysseus battles mystical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus stave off suitors vying for Penelope's hand and Ithaca's throne long enough for Odysseus to return. It is one of the oldest extant works of literature still read by contemporary audiences.
In this edition, W.H.D. Rouse, the translator, says, "HOmer speaks naturally and we must do the same. That is what I ahve tried to do in this book, and I ask that it may be judged simply as a story." And it worked. As The London Times wrote, "His version is always alive and gives us The Odyssey as the great and moving story it is." "Dr. Rouse has made Homer live, and has compelled us to see hat his contemporaries were men and women like ourselves. I suppose I have read the Odyssey a dozen times; but I never before saw its characters so clearly." So judged the Christian Science Monitor.
For the first time (or one of many) read "the best story ever written, a favorite for three thousand years."
