Great Blue Heron

Photographer's note:

On a crisp, cloudy morning I drove around the auto-route of the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge with a friend.  Driving along a narrow dirt road, we spied a large Great Blue Heron standing on a levee across a narrow canal. The gentle low light allowed me to get a nice close-up that showed very clearly the detailed and delicate feathers of this magnificent bird.

Camera: Nikon D7100; f/9; 1/320 second. Lens: Nikkor 55-300 mm; image taken at 280 mm; ISO 250.

Great Egret

Photographer's note:

In early 2019 I drove around the auto-route at the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge. It was a bright winter morning with soft light highlighting the resident birds, including this lovely Great Egret.  She seemed to be standing guard on a small levee, overlooking her domain.

Camera:  Nikon D7100; f/10; 1/320 second. Lens:  Tamron 150-600mm zoom; image taken at 350 mm; ISO 250.

White-Faced Ibis

Photographer's note:

On a winter afternoon at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, I enjoyed the golden light reflecting on the pools as I drove the auto-route.  In the middle of one pool a solitary White Faced Ibis was gathering her afternoon meal.  The golden light reflected on her luminescent wings, making this a striking, almost ethereal image.

Camera:  Nikon D7100; f/7.1; 1/320 second. Lens: Tamron 150-600 mm.  Image taken at 600 mm; ISO 125.
