Encaustic Mixed Media, 11 x 14 inches

I chose to use encaustic for this piece, an art technique of applying heated beeswax, damar (tree) resin, and pigment to a rigid panel that allows for embedding of collage elements and use of mixed media. Although I have been painting in oils for the past 30 years, experimenting with the use of hot wax appealed to me here because of the nature of this project that was born from fire. In keeping with this theme, the elements I used to create it are derived from nature--the wood panel, wasp nest paper, beeswax, tree resin, oil pigments, Bombay India ink, and charcoal--all have been transformed with heat, once again, in service of artistic expression.
