Abel Pann was among the first of the Zionist artists whose work gave expression to the vision and the reality of the Jewish people's return to its land. Pann reached the fulfillment of his art and his life in the Land of Israel, creating the core of his biblical art in the Land of the Bible where he chose to live, leaving behind the charms of Paris and the blandishments of America. His greatness was his ability to keep the human element in his artistic works. His works combine the abstract and the realistic while uniting East and West. Pann came to Jerusalem bearing Western culture, but there he imbibed images of the East and its special atmosphere. His offering to the West was ancient Jewish orientalism, charged with the strength of primeval power, reinforcing the ancient message, "From Zion goes forth Torah."
