Description

Oceans of Vows: Alex Cline's Flower Garland Orchestra is a deluxe box set of music drawing inspiration from four poems by Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and with musical settings of small excerpts from the voluminous Buddhist scripture known as the Avatamsaka Sutra, or Flower Garland Discourse. It's performed by composer/percussionist Alex Cline and his all-star 14-piece Flower Garland Orchestra, featuring Nels Cline, Yuka C. Honda, G.E. Stinson, Jeff Gauthier, Areni Agbabian, and many others.

Oceans of Vows is a nearly two-hour piece of music Mr. Cline composed during 2015 after being awarded a grant from the Shifting Foundation in late January of that year to compose, perform, and record it. Consisting of two parts, each part is comprised of five movements, each lasting close to one hour. The piece had its premiere at the Plaza del Sol Concert Hall (Valley Performing Arts Center) on the campus of California State University, Northridge, as the closing event of that year's Angel City Jazz Festival.

Alex Cline, twin brother of guitarist Nels Cline, is a talented drummer, percussionist, and composer in his own right, and a dharma teacher in the Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism.
