Description

Handmade Pit Fired Sculptural Bird

Measures 3 ½ inches high x 6inches  wide

Donated by Heather Grillo

Sourced by Beth McAllister

Heather Grillo has been up to her elbows in clay for the past 5 years. She is usually found experimenting with some new form or technique in her home studios in Los Altos and on Nantucket. She enjoys making functional ware on the wheel but since Covid she has been drawn to sculptural and art ceramics.  Her focus this past year has been on sculptural birds.  This auction piece was part of a recent pit fire in California.  The pieces are nestled in a bed of hay in a deep pit and covered with sawdust and twigs and larger wood. The pit is set ablaze. Once the flames are out and the pieces are glowing red hot, the pit is covered. The pieces are unearthed about 24 hours later to reveal beautiful swirls and colors from the smoke.
