Beth Herman Adler fell in love with printmaking, specifically monotypes, in a workshop about 10 years ago. Since then, she has been using this medium to tell stories in handmade books, and to translate natural forms into abstract shapes in large monoprints. Monoprinting is an iterative process. One pull on the press informs the next. Like lifting a rock in the woods and not being quite sure what wonders lie beneath, each time she lifts the paper from the plate, there is a surprise that can change everything that comes after. Combining the results with more deliberate marks and linoleum and woodcuts, the random and the intentional come together to form the finished work.
