Description

21.5"L on longest side, 15.5"L on shorter sides. 7.5"H. Triangular hat box with rosemaling. The donor writes, "This piece represents a classic example of folk artists collaborating to create a special piece. Three Vesterheim Gold Medalists put their talents together - a woodworker constructed the box, a blacksmith created the iron work, and a rosemaler decorated it. Dick Enstad, the woodworker, modeled this special tri-corner hat box after a museum piece he saw and photographed at Mølstertunet Folk Museum in Voss, Norway. Dick's work is known for its precise execution. The box is designed to hold a special woman's tri-folded headpiece that was worn on special occasions. The beautiful iron work was done by Tom Latané. Tom uses only a forge and hand tools, and walking into his shop is like stepping back in history a hundred years. The style of rosemaling on the box was inspired from a painted sled from 'Valdres 1831' and gives the feeling of a more feminine style." Signed and dated by artist. Artist: Shirley Evenstad, Vesterheim Gold Medal rosemaler.
