Description

This incredible antique blown glass Ultima Thule Centerpiece Bowl is from the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland.  Quite frankly, it's hard to capture the special effects created by this bowl.  It was inspired by the melting ice in Lapland.  One really does get the sense of melting ice as you experience this piece!  This Ultima Thule bowl's design is considered Finnish sculptor Tapio Wirkkala's (1915-1985) most famous work.  It is Mouth Blown Glass. It is considered post-modernist and its beauty creates a bold statement.

The Iittala website describes the Ultima Thule Centerpiece Bowl: "Ultima Thule’s iconic design features a rounded base supported by three ice peaks that float above the surface, bringing a slice of Nordic nature to any interior. The Ultima Thule bowl makes a striking serving platter for fruits or desserts. Stunning gift.

Tapio Wirkkala was the pioneer of modern Finnish industrial art. His internationally renowned glass designs were inspired by the raw beauty of his native Finland. Wirkkala’s cottage in remote Lapland was so isolated that Iittala helicoptered supplies in. Determined to recreate an ice-covered Finnish island where the sun never sets, Wirkkala spent nearly a thousand hours with the glassblowers at the Iittala Glass Factory, defying the rules of glassblowing."
