Contemporary Fused Glass Plate: BEYOND THE PATH by Artist Gabriele Baumann

Item Number: 272
Time Left: CLOSED

Description
"If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads." -Anatole France...I wanted to create a piece that conveys that concept and encourages us onward.
Dimensions: 9 ¾ inches x 9 ¾ inches
Medium: Kiln formed glass
Description: Bullseye art glass (~2.5 lbs.), 3-5 layers of opalescent glass combined with iridescent red glass. Kiln fired, ground and hand polished with a flower design sandblasted in red glass and then fire polished.
I used the stack technique to create a "path" that follows along a beautiful space lined with lightly sandblasted designs that hint at the idea of flowers. An uneven edge on one side suggests the continuity of a path that travels beyond the plate.
This technique requires a high temperature and several firings of 24-hour cycles to achieve a flat surface. Using a mold, the last of the firings gives the piece its shape.
This plate looks great as a decorative piece, functional glassware, or it can be hung on a wall with special wall plate hangers. If necessary, it is recommended that you hand wash this piece.

About the artist:
Gabriele Baumann is a German-born fused glass artist from Burlington, Vermont. She was a manager of a travel agency in Germany before she moved to Toronto with her husband, and later to Burlington where they now reside with their four children.
She opened a home-based baking business for a few years, also catering to two cafes. After winning a fused glass workshop with the Davis Studio here in Burlington through a raffle at the annual Art Hop, she became fascinated with glass. She has always enjoyed contemporary design and finds glass to be a perfect medium to express her ideas and to utilize her skills of precision and attention to detail. Gabriele's work is influenced by her European heritage and everything she sees around her in nature, textiles and photography.
