Description: "This artwork was the first painting I did in a group setting. It was created during a virtual paint-night hosted by non-profit Art180 during the pandemic. I was seeking out ways to become better connected with the community I lived around, looking for ways to become involved and maybe give back. Art180 seemed to lineup with most of what I was looking for but I had no idea how to work with them. Well, when I showed up for the virtual paint-night even I apparently impressed the directors so much that they wanted me to join their team and now I'm helping teach youth various creative skills and broaden their horizons. This work is representative of that desire to connect as well as being a reminder of the opportunity to be a part of something greater. It was painted digitally, and then the image was sublimated onto aluminum to create a metal print. I consider the original image the digital painting itself."

Artist Statement:

Reconnecting with my craft in a meaningful way during the Pandemic was probably one of the best decisions of my life so far. I felt genuine happiness and had more fun than I'd had in a long time creating. The first series of art that I created during that time was about my family and it was immensely therapeutic. I'd also used it to cope and process with several other losses that same year. I even explored tackling some of the ideas surrounding my status as a black person, and the context of my existence as a fair-skinned black person in the greater context of the black diaspora. So my art, now has helped me feel validated and a lot freer, mentally as I use it now as an outlet for my thoughts and feelings that were otherwise stifled and repressed for long periods of time.
