About Chawan:
This chawan (teabowl) was formed by a traditional Japanese hand building method from a solid piece of clay. After drying the piece was single fired to 2150F. While the piece was still at its peak temperature it was removed from the kiln and placed in a bin of combustibles and left to cool. The clay is partially vitrified after this temperature and can be used for the intended purpose of serving tea during the tea ceremony. The piece can safely be microwaved but it is not recommended. Since the clay is still slightly porous, it should only be washed by hand and should be dried after use.

About the Artist:
Originally from Rock Springs, Wyoming, Jacob Vinson received his Bachelor's Degree in ceramics from Utah State University in 2009. He received his M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. and is currently an adjunct professor. His work currently revolves around contemporary materials used in conjunction with traditional processes and the potential interruption that can come as a result. His ceramic work has been shown at multiple galleries nationally and his tea bowls have traveled the world.
