Terrence McNally's play The Lisbon Traviata features two of the playwright's favorite subjects: gay relationships and Maria Callas. 

Two friends and opera queens come together to listen to records, dish and generally forget about how their lives are falling apart. The show's title comes from an actual unauthorized amateur recording made by a cast member of a 1958 production of La Traviata during a live performance at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. The production starred opera diva Maria Callas and the incredibly rare copies of the recording have become collectors items among opera fans around the world.

The Lisbon Traviata played Off-Broadway from May 23, 1989, until January 28, 1990 and starred Nathan Lane, earning him Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards for Best Actor.

This sketch by legendary artist Al Hirschfeld features Lane as Mendy. It was first published in The New York Times' Friday theater column on November 10, 1989.
