Alan Menken has been writing award-winning songs since the age of nine, when he entered a junior composer competition and scored "superior" ratings from the judges. His earliest stage successes came alongside his late writing partner, Howard Ashman. They scored first with Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway, soon followed by big-screen, box office hits. 

The world took notice when Walt Disney Studios hired the duo in 1988 to score its animated film The Little Mermaid, which kicked off an era known as the Disney Renaissance. The Little Mermaid won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1989. The win initiated a short sequence of domination where Menken won three scoring Oscars in four years - for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast in 1991 and Aladdin in 1992.
