THE ARTIST: Matthew Moutafis was born in New York, graduated from the School of Visual Arts, and Pratt Institute in New York, where he studied fine art and illustration, receiving his BA degree in fine arts. He has received many awards in his career as an artist and art director, including the Art Director's Show Award in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, and Tucson. Other major accomplishments include New York City's Alexander Award and the American Institute of Graphic Artist's Award. Some of the companies he has contributed his creative talents to include Up with People, Valley National Bank, Union Bank, PepsiCo International, JC Penney, General Electric, Home Savings and Loan, TEC, Inc., Tucson Unified School District, The University of Arizona and The Tucson Convention Center. He has also taught various painting classes through The U. of A. Continuing Education and Pima County Parks and Recreation Classes.

Matthew and his wife moved to Oro Valley in 1975 where he has since generously contributed his time and talents to create art for Oro Valley and be a very active part of his community. He is well-known in Oro Valley for creating an abundance of local public art (sculptures, paintings, metal art) and even designed the Oro Valley Town Logo. His work is collected nationwide and exhibited in France, Germany and Japan. His art shows his love for the southwest and his fascination and passion for beauty.

In 2001 he was awarded the First Place prize for his painting, The Face Painters: Oro Valley 25th Anniversary Celebration, at the First Annual Oro Valley Fine Arts Competition sponsored by the Town of Oro Valley through the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council. He designed the future 2-1/2 acre So. Arizona Veterans and First Responders Living Memorial to be constructed in the very near future in Naranja Park in Oro Valley.
