Irony 2018 Monterey Pinot Noir, 2 bottles

Monterey is known for world class Pinot Noir, largely attributed to the strong maritime influence of the Monterey Bay. Beginning with aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and cocoa, supple tannins and balanced acidity are complemented on the palate with lush black fruit flavors and hints of soft toasted oak. Most of us didn't imagine where we would be right now. Sure, we dreamed of being firemen, astronauts, rock stars and superheroes, but life often takes you where you didn't expect it to. My brother and I worked every harvest from the time we could ride our bikes. After college, our careers took us beyond the land our grandfather planted in 1924.

Ironically, today we are more fulfilled, working side-by-side at the family vineyard & winery. We didn't plan it or expect it, but we are enjoying this strange twist in our lives.

Onward - 2021 Mendocino, Nouveau Style Zinfandel, 100% Whole Cluster, 2 Bottles

This wine was inspired by 2020. This is the first of the vintage and it is loaded with aromas of red cherry and cranberry that jump out of the glass, followed by fresh cranberry sauce with orange and red currant jelly, with a subtle hint of raw pink peppercorn dancing about. This wine is about the young and fresh side of wine. She is exciting, fresh and adventurous, breaking down barriers and bringing people together, brightening the day of all who meet her.

Farmstrong Field Claret - 2 Bottles

Modeled after the classic "Clairet" of Bordeaux, which were Bordeaux red blends that were more moderate in tannin, often blended with Malbec to craft a softer wine, the Farmstrong Field Claret is a field blend of grapes picked on the same day, from the same family vineyard, and then co-fermented (all fermented in the same tank together). It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot from the Johnson Family Home Ranch in Ukiah, CA.

The vineyard is farmed sustainably, and is certified Fish Friendly Farming.

Winemakers Notes:

A field pick of Cabernet, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, picked and co-fermented in an open top fermenter. About 14 days on the skins, pressed, and barrel aged in neutral French Oak for 8 months. Farmstrong Claret is a moderately extracted, claret style wine that showcases fresh Bordeaux varietal notes of fresh cherries, red currant and berries, oil cured black olives with fresh herbs, and some dusty cocoa. On the palate natural acid frames frames the wine along with moderate tannins. Unfined.

Farmstrong 2017 Field Red, 2 bottles

This wine fills the glass with aromas of dark fruit, pencil shavings, grilled bread and hints of freshly ground white pepper, which are complemented by flavors of black plums, preserves, cranberry and warm Okanagan cherry clafouti that’s been cooked in a cast iron pan.

This wine has loads of fruit, mellow tannins and complex aromatics, it is a go-to red, she is super fun and refreshingly reliable.

Winemaker's Notes: This is a blend from three of my growers and they are all sustainably dry farmed sites: 80+ years old Carignane from Hawkeye Ranch in Redwood Valley (36%), 120+ years old Carignane from Casa Roja Vineyard in Contra Costa (28%), and Syrah from Ledgewood Vineyard in Suisun Valley (36%).

Both the Carignane lots were 90% de-stemmed and 10% whole cluster, they were fermented in open top stainless steel tanks with punch downs. I included 33% whole cluster fermentation in this Syrah lot and it was fermented in an open top fermenter (with pigeage by yours truly), this added a complexity that I am really excited about. After the native fermentation was finished the wines were put to barrel and aged in 9% once-used oak and 91% neutral French oak. Once secondary (native malolactic) fermentation was complete the barrel selected blend was racked together, becoming Farmstrong Field Red. The wine was put back to barrel for a total elevage of 10 months before being bottled in the summer.

All three of the vineyard sites where the grapes of this blend are grown have a large diurnal temperature shift. This is a key element that allows the fruit to be balanced and beaming with flavor at lower sugars, allowing me to harvest earlier and retain the lovely natural acidity, vibrant red fruits and floral notes.

Godspeed 2013 Mount Veeder Chardonnay, 2 bottles

The vines were planted in 1987 using the "Spring Mountain Clone." These same vines earned Godspeed Wine Enthusiast's "Chardonnay of the Year" award in the previous year. Burgundian in style and featuring our 100% Estate Mountain grown, hand-harvested Chardonnay, the grapes are whole clustered crushed, and barrel fermented (no malolactic and lightly oaked with less that 25% new oak barrels). A crisp refreshing wine with a tropical fruit nose and a citrus back that drinks especially well in warm weather and pairs beautifully with Southwestern and Asian Cuisine. "Rivals Chassagne-Montrachet." "A great food wine and age-worthy Chardonnay." 2013 vintage received a Double Gold Medal at the American Fine Wine Competition 2016.

Godspeed is an artisan grower in the Mount Veeder Appellation of Napa Valley situated at an altitude of 1500 ft. The vineyard is the project of the Larry Stricker family. Larry is an acclaimed architect who has created world-class resort hotels, including the Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona; the Marriott Desert Springs Resort and a series of Hawaiian properties including the Halekulani, Kahala Resort, Kapalua Bay Hotel and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. At his Mount Veeder estate, he has over time sold his world-class fruit to recognized wineries including Robert Craig, Bremmer, William Hill, Newton & Monticello. Since 1990 he has taken advantage of his exceptional vineyard by bottling half his production under his own label. Three wines are produced at Godspeed: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Trinity. All three are made in a very elegant, almost "European" style, with an emphasis on the vineyard's unique micro-climate, as expressed in the wine's balance and fruit element.
