Contains all five essays that comprise A Yankee in Canada, with 10 separate essays. This is the first time Thoreau's essay, "Civil Disobedience," appears in a book and with this title (although it first was printed in the single issue of the periodical, Aesthetic Papers). The ten essays are: "Slavery in Massachusetts," "Prayers" (which was written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, although a poem fragment from Thoreau is quoted in it), "Civil Disobedience," "A Plea for Captain John Brown," "Paradise (To Be) Regained," "Herald of Freedom," "Thomas Carlyle and His Works," "Life Without Principle," "Wendell Phillips Before the Concord Lyceum," and "The Last Days of John Brown." This edition had 1,546 copies, bound in various colors. This copy is in green cloth with framing blindstamp and center wreaths on both covers. This copy carries a signature of its first owner, Theodore H. Vultee, who was a member of The Mercantile Library Association in New York City. Condition of this book is very good. It is partially wrapped in fragments of archival plastic. A few pencilings appear on pages. Some chips appear at the head and heel of outer spine.
