The Harvard Classics is a 50-volume series of classic works of world literature, important speeches, and historicaldocuments compiled and edited by then-Harvard President Charles W. Eliot. Eliot believed that spending 15 minutes per day reading these works would offer the reader the benefits of a liberal education without having to attend school. P.F. Collier & Son published the first 25 volumes in 1909, and the next 25 were published in 1910.
Eliot is the longest-serving Harvard president, having served for 40 years between 1869 and 1909. Under his tenure, Harvard vastly expanded from a small New England college to a major national and international university.
